Prestigious arbitration award for ABC Life Member

Prestigious arbitration award for ABC Life Member

The Association of Building Consultants (ABC) is proud to acknowledge the outstanding career achievement of Life Member Tom Grace, a respected construction and engineering specialist lawyer with Fenwick Elliott Grace, who has been awarded the Resolution Institute Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement in the Professional Certificate in Arbitration.

In a remarkable family milestone, Tom’s daughter, Karlie Grace, was also recognised by the University of Adelaide with the Stow Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement in first year law. The Stow Prize, perhaps the most prestigious of the university’s prizes, is awarded to the student achieving the highest combined scores in the four foundation subjects of a law degree. It was the first time in Adelaide University’s history a father/daughter pair have received top academic awards at the same Law School Ceremony.

Tom’s award celebrates distinction in the Professional Certificate in Arbitration, a postgraduate program jointly delivered by the University of Adelaide Law School and the Resolution Institute. The program was launched to address a growing national reliance on arbitration as a preferred method of dispute resolution - particularly within industries such as building, finance, insurance, mining and real estate.

ABC President, Fred Centofanti, said the Association is proud to count professionals of such high standing among its South Australian-based membership.

“Tom’s well-deserved recognition is the latest example of the very high calibre of skilled and experienced members we attract and support. Karlie’s award is also a terrific achievement, and we extend our congratulations to her as well on this superb result,” Mr Centofanti said.

“The Association of Building Consultants brings together professionals from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds who are committed to lifelong learning and excellence, and we are very proud of Tom and Karlie in achieving these prestigious accolades,” he said.

In welcoming the professional recognition, Mr Grace said there was growing demand for arbitration skills across a range of professional sectors.

“It’s a genuine honour to receive this award. Arbitration is ideally suited to dispute resolution for the construction industry, allowing decision makers and the parties to agree on a tailored process to resolve their dispute with efficiency and speed.  Arbitration is backed by law and allows confidential, cost effective and enforceable decisions to be made by industry experts. The course was a great opportunity to expand my horizons and interact with others who work in this area.”

The Professional Certificate in Arbitration reflects a national shift away from costly court proceedings, with businesses and professionals increasingly turning to arbitration for its efficiency, confidentiality and enforceability - particularly in contracts where binding arbitration clauses are standard.

President Fred Centofanti said: “As demand grows for alternative dispute resolution and expert advice in complex construction matters, the Association of Building Consultants continues to support and showcase the expertise of members – especially industry -leading professionals like Tom Grace who are helping to shape the future of our industry."
